Writer’s Workshop for Biliteracy

 Writer’s Workshop for Biliteracy:  Writer’s Workshop is an effective tool for inspiring students to take ownership of their own writing and for engaging students in the process of writing in a wide variety of writing genres.  This workshop will model Writer’s Workshop within a biliteracy setting, where students are required to engage in writing in both of the program languages.  Participants will review strategies for building students’ oral language in anticipation of writing, planning for rigor in writing instruction, and establishing schedules and routines for writing.

Participants will:

  • Review effective strategies for the development of oracy within the context of writing
  • Describe the components and routines of Writer’s Workshop within a Biliteracy Unit Framework
  • Analyze the intention and rigor of grade level writing standards and assess whether products meet these intentions and rigor
  • Distinguish between routines, components, and instruction of Writer’s Workshop and  describe their purpose in a schedule

Audience:

  • Spanish medium classroom teachers in dual language, two-way immersion, one-way immersion, or transitional bilingual programs of instruction
  • English medium classroom teachers in dual language, two-way immersion, one-way immersion, or transitional bilingual programs of instruction
  • District Level Administrator
  • Building Administrators (Principals and Assistant Principals)
  • Instructional/Literacy Coaches
  • Reading or Intervention Specialists
  • Support Personnel such as ESL teachers, Gifted teachers (that support students in Biliteracy development)

 

Programs: This session’s content is applicable to: 80/20 and 50/50 One-Way, Two-Way, Foreign Language Immersion Programs, Transitional Bilingual Education and Maintenance Bilingual Programs

Grade levels: K-8

Language(s):  This session will be conducted primarily in English, with some examples in Spanish
