A Biliteracy Unit in Second Grade:  English

Part 3:

In Part 3 of this video series, Karen Beeman engages students in English Language Arts, or extension activities as  the concluding part of this Biliteracy unit. The literacy focus of the English literacy part of the unit is literature. Students compare and contrast fiction and non-fiction texts on the topic of living things. Strategies used in the English literacy portion of the unit include: Adapted Reader’s Theater (oracy and background knowledge), Active Reading and Personalized Words, Language Experience Approach (Reading Comprehension), Parallel Lines (preparing for writing) and Writing. 2nd Grade English Extension Activities in a Transitional Bilingual Program

In this video, Karen Beeman conducts English extension activities with 2nd grade transitional bilingual students.  These English activities are part of a Biliteracy Unit focused on an integrated unit of science and literacy.  This is a BUF (Biliteracy Unit Framework) that was designed to go from Spanish, and then Bridge to English.  Therefore, the majority of this unit was done in Spanish, and students had already learned about the life cycle of living things and informational text features in Spanish; plus they had already done the Bridge (see other video clips of these other parts of the unit).  This video highlights the English Extension activities that develop oracy (listening and speaking) and literacy (reading and writing) and it highlights a sequential bilingual student new from Puerto Rico.  Notice how the instructional supports and connections to Spanish help him in English.
