Below you find the 4 Biliteracy Units that accompany the text, Teaching for Biliteracy: Strengthening Bridges between Languages, Beeman and Urow.

Please note that the following about these 4 BUFs:

-They are general unit plans

-A separate lesson plan would need to be developed for each

-These units span about a 2 to 6 week period.

First Grade – Self/Story of My Life:

1st Grade Sample BUF – This sample BUF integrates social studies and language arts in a unit where students explore the story of their own life and how they have changed over time, while learning to recognize key elements of narratives and then applying them to the writing of their own personal narrative. The unit is anchored in the IL Social Science Standards (an adaptation of the national C3 Framework for Social Studies)  and the Common Core State Standards for literacy. This BUF is one unit of study within a biliteracy curriculum map that spans an entire year (to be posted here soon). This sample reflects the needs and structure of the program for which it was created.

1st Grade Sample Language & Content Allocation Plan, Daily Schedule & Weekly Lesson Plan – This document shows the language and content allocation plan of the program for which the 1st grade sample BUF was written, and how it was translated into a daily schedule. It also details how BUF activities are organized and implemented across the first week of instruction (weeks 2 and 3 will be posted here soon).

Fourth Grade:

4th Grade Sample Biliteracy Map – This is a sample year long biliteracy map that uses the 4th grade North Carolina Content standards (for science and social studies) and the Common Core State Standards for literacy. Check back soon to see this document updated using the Next Generation Science Standards and the C3 Framework Social Studies standards.  Please note that this biliteracy map is a sample and reflects the realities of the North Carolina district for which it was created.   The BUF (biliteracy unit framework) below reflects one unit of study within this year-long plan.

4th grade Sample BUF – This BUF (biliteracy unit framework) uses the Social Studies content (using the C3 Framework standards) to study Immigrants Past and Present, Characters, Point of View, and Narratives.  Please note that the BUF is a unit plan.  See some sample corresponding lesson plans that outline the day -to-day instruction of the unit.

4th grade Sample Daily Schedule and Lesson Plan – This document shows how the 4th Grade Sample BUF (from above) may be actualized over a three week classroom over a course of three weeks via a lesson plan.
