January 28, 2026:  NEW! Online The Bridge and “bridging”

Back by popular demand and updated with new content! This virtual one-day institute is open to all educators and leaders interested in strengthening their implementation of the Bridge for biliteracy. Whether you are deep into biliteracy and dual language instruction or just beginning to integrate the Bridge into your practice, this session offers clarity, guidance and tools, and support for ensuring students engage in transfer and contrastive analysis.

Participants will:

  • Review the Biliteracy Unit Framework and the three linguistic spaces of biliteracy instruction: Spanish (or a non-English language), English, and the Bridge and its two purposes
  • Deepen their understanding of the Bridge as a key component of biliteracy instruction
  • Distinguish between the Bridge (as a pedagogical moment focused on transfer and contrastive analysis) and bridging (translanguaging and engaging in cross-linguistic connections)
  • Explore strategies to implement the Bridge more intentionally and consistently across content areas
  • Engage in interactive activities and small group discussions focused on implementation, challenges and solutions
  • Leave with resources and tools to support next steps in your schools and programs

Join us for a one-day, live online institute designed for early childhood, pre-kinder educators in bilingual and dual language programs. Through a highly interactive format, the institute will feature:

  • Strategic use of Spanish (or other non-English languages) and English in developmentally appropriate ways
  • Best practices for engaging young learners in content, language, and literacy development
  • Strategies for introducing and supporting the Bridge and bridging between languages in PreK/TK
  • Programmatic tools such as biliteracy schedules, language/content allocation plans, and curriculum maps tailored for PreK/TK settings

Join us for a two-day live, online session designed for educators in bilingual and dual language programs who teach the English-side of biliteracy. Through a highly interactive format, the institute will feature:

  • An overview of comprehensive literacy and the importance of teaching it in English in K-2 as part of a robust biliteracy program
  • How English instruction differs from more transparent languages like Spanish
  • What word recognition instruction looks like in English
  • What language comprehension instruction looks like in English
  • How to address all the components of comprehensive literacy, even in 80/20 programs

 

February 24, 2026:  NEW!  Online Leading for Biliteracy: Strategies and Tools for Program Success

This virtual one-day session is designed for school and district leaders, program coordinators, and leadership teams—especially those guiding or supporting dual language and biliteracy programs in PreK–12 settings.  During this session we will:

  • Explore strategies that support effective instructional leadership in biliteracy and dual language programs, using a systems approach and including all key stakeholders including district and school leaders.
  • Discuss, review, and analyze  roles and responsibilities for the various district and school leaders
  • Review and create communications protocols and plans to ensure common understandings across key biliteracy and dual language stakeholders (teachers, parents, coaches, and leaders).

In addition, we will review the protocols from The Biliteracy Handbook to support the systems approach (ensuring that all structures work as a system) and to ensure that the dual language program is well-implemented.  Protocols from the Handbook include:

  • Develop a shared program vision and pedagogy
  • Create or refine a language and content allocation plan
  • Build biliteracy schedules
  • Evaluate the biliteracy curriculum
  • Create tools to ensure that optimal instruction occurs in every dual language program
  • Explore how biliteracy structures work together as a cohesive system to support the three pillars of dual language education and align with the Guiding Principles for Dual Language Education

This virtual institute is designed for middle and high school educators, administrators, and program leaders who are developing or refining dual language and biliteracy programs at the secondary level. In this interactive two-day institute, participants will explore how the Teaching for Biliteracy Recommendations can guide curriculum mapping decisions that support students in meeting the three pillars of dual language. We will examine real examples of standards-based biliteracy maps, discuss how to use published resources within your program’s framework, and share tools that can help your team assess and refine curriculum maps.

April 14 and 15, 2026: NEW! Online Biliteracy Trajectories: Tracking Growth Through Formative Assessment

This two-day virtual institute will explore biliteracy trajectories as a framework for monitoring and supporting students’ literacy development in each program language and across languages. The session will feature a variety of authentic examples of assessments and demonstrate how to use them to document student growth in language development and academic achievement and inform short- and long-term instructional decisions.

Participants will leave with practical strategies to empower students, support biliteracy growth, and engage families and communities in creating a system of accountability.

Participants will:

  • Distinguish between monoliteracy and biliteracy developmental trajectories
  • Apply formative assessment strategies to monitor and support biliteracy growth
  • Identify classroom practices that document student growth in language development and academic achievement

Los(as) (les) invitamos a que participen en el Instituto de dos días de La enseñanza de la lectoescritura bilingüe, una experiencia dinámica exclusivamente en español y diseñada para educadores que trabajan en:

  • Programas bilingües o de lenguaje dual
  • Programas de lenguaje dual de una sola vía o de dos vías
  • Grados K-5

A raíz de esta capacitación profesional, los participantes podrán:

  • Utilizar estrategias efectivas para el uso estratégico del español (u otro idioma que no sea el inglés) y el inglés como parte de la enseñanza de la lectoescritura bilingüe
  • Describir las prácticas más efectivas para la enseñanza de la lectoescritura bilingüe
  • Utilizar estrategias prácticas para implementar el Puente entre lenguas
  • Utilizar el esquema de la unidad de la lectoescritura bilingüe (BUF, por sus siglas en inglés) para diseñar e impartir instrucción basada en los estándares, el desarrollo de lenguaje, refleja las mejores prácticas de la enseñanza de la lectoescritura
